Description

Our eagles are made of stamped metal with attaching loops on back. Approximately 3″ wide and 2″ high.

In 1821 the 3-inch Eagle was established as the primary cap insignia for all branches of service. Army regulations published in 1821 prescribed for the caps of all company officers and enlisted personnel a “yellow eagle in front, three inches between the tips of the wings” At first, the color of all Army cap insignia was supposed to be “yellow” brass in accordance with regulations in effect since 1815. In 1822 the Secretary of War ordered all metal equipment of the infantry (including the cap eagle) to be changed to white metal in keeping with its pompons, tassels and lace. In 1832 cap eagles were returned to brass although there was no change in cap insignia authorized. Light Artillery dress caps displayed the traditional 3-inch eagles until after the Civil War.
