Description

These are original Hoffman 2nd Pattern steel scabbards with swiveling leather froggs for the socket bayonet of the .45-70 trapdoor breech loading Springfield Rifle. The 2nd pattern of the Hoffman swivel, made at Watervliet Arsenal, was a modification of the 1st pattern to prevent the full 360 degree rotation it allowed. This uses twin tongues to hold the steel scabbard to the leather frog. Neither of the tongues have rivets as used in the 1873 pattern scabbards. There is no brass rosette for this model. They are in overall poor to fair condition with pitting and rust spots to the formerly blued steel scabbard. The leather frog portion is present but somewhat weak with cracks and crazing yet most (if not all) stitching is present. The swivels themselves function for a 90 degree rotation. Price is for one scabbard only.
