Description
In 1839 the American Minister in Paris was directed to buy 300 French Model 1829 Artillery Sabers for possible adoption by the US. In August 1840 the Ordinance Dept. purchased 500 of this pattern saber from S&K in Solingen, Prussia. Later it was made by Ames Mfg. Co.
This sword has a curved blade, which is single edged with a false edge extending back ten inches from the point. It has etching on both sides of the blade. The scabbard is polished steel with two rings and a well developed asymmetrical drag. The guard is also brass. Overall Length: 40 3/4″, Blade Length: 35″ x1 1/4″ wide at the hilt.
