Description

Scarce Springfield Model 1868 Cadet Dated 1869 #2383 Excellent Bore

Cal is .50-70 Center Fire. Fine, scarce cadet rifle with 29-1/2” round barrel, square base front sight/bayonet lug and 900 yard ladder rear sight. It has a deep stamped 1869 marked breech block with eagle and crossed arrows over “U.S.” and a proper spring loaded firing pin. Lock plate is a standard Civil War style dated “1864”. It is mounted in a one piece full length, straight grain,  American walnut stock with two barrel bands and raised side panels with a smaller than musket butt plate. It has a clear “ESA” cartouche for Erskine S. Allin. It has two piece trigger guard and no provision from sling swivels. It also has the correct slotted head ramrod with shoulder stop. About 3,400 of these cadet rifles were made in the period 1869-76 for issue to the cadets at West Point, Annapolis, VMI and other military academies. Few survive today and of those, not many have any decent condition. This rifle is in Very Fine condition. Metal has an attractive even  satin gray patina. Receiver, breechblock and hammer retain faded case colors that have turned to a mix of silver and light patina. Stock has also been carefully cleaned and restored. Stock has a nice look with fine side panel edges. It has NO chips or cracks. The normal bumps and burses are present from use. Mechanics are fine. Bright shiny bore. It has matching serial numbers on barrel & receiver. Extractor and action work perfect. Lock is dated 1864 and the action is crisp and strong. Stock has 1 cartouche that is correct for this model. This scarce Rifle would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
